I have been a natural hair girl since 2008 and as you can imagine I have gone through my fair share of natural hair products. Many of you who follow me on Instagram have asked me to share my favorite natural hair products for frizzy curly hair with you and I am so glad to support you on your natural hair journey in this way.
I will organize this blog post with my top 3 natural hair products in the following four categories:
4) Gels
I will share a list of what products I am using right now, as well as the products I used along the way. But you can skip right to the end by clicking here → (My current hair routine) I think the phrase “hair journey” is so fitting, because at each phase my hair was asking for different things, and my skills at styling my hair also continue to allow me to experiment with different things. See my blog post about how I transformed my frizzy curly hair with a Deva cut here. I will try and identify where I was on my hair journey when the product listed became my favorite, of course, feel free to mix and match.
Frizzy Hair Natural Hair Shampoos and Conditioners
My favorite shampoo when I was a NEW natural was the blue Redkin bottle. You can find this shampoo at Ulta and at Amazon. To me, this is a great transitional shampoo for someone who is looking for an easy to find a brand that will leave you with a shiny finish. The reason I don’t recommend this brand for someone who is really looking to take the leap to a natural hair journey is that it has sulfates and silicones which are not the best products for natural hair.
Even with that said if you are someone who goes back and forth between straight and curly hair, and you don’t mind sulfates and silicones… Redkin is a great option for frizzy curly hair.
Pros
I loved it because it left my hair feeling super soft and looking super shiny. This shampoo is great if you are someone who goes back and forth from curly to straight as it does well with both hairstyles.
Cons
Redkin products contain sulfates and silicons which really aren’t the best for your hair even if you are not honoring your natural texture. I do take my hair care very seriously now so I haven’t used this shampoo in several months, but this is the only shampoo and conditioner I would recommend if you are indifferent about silicones and sulfates.
Nature’s Gate
I used the shampoo for years! It’s such a clean, natural, and inexpensive shampoo that is a favorite for my natural hair. You can find Nature’s Gate on Amazon, Whole Foods, and I even found it at Walmart one time. It leaves your hair feeling super clean and moisturized. I don’t remember why I stopped using this one actually. LOL
Pros
- Great price! Sulfate Free (It does have silicone).
- Leaves the hair feeling clean and moisturized.
- This is a Natural, Vegan hair product, non-GMO. Gluten Free, Paraben Free, Soy Free, and Cruelty-Free shampoo. It has NO – Sodium Sulfates, Phthalates, EDTA, Butylene Glycol, Artificial Colors. Which is all fancy talk for; it’s a great product for your hair.
- The price is very reasonable! It does a great job with zero fuss and if you spill it all over the shower you won’t cry in the corner. Oh wait… am I the only one who does that??
Cons
It has a very natural smell, it’s not unpleasant but you can tell that the ingredients come from the earth.
Innersense
This is what I am using right now! This one is more of an investment but leaves my hair so light and shiny. I have been using this for 7 months, and the results so far have been amazing! In fact, the results from this product line are exactly why you guys asked me to write this blog post. And PS thanks for all the warm compliments on my hair lately! It makes me excited about how my natural hair will continue to settle into this new product line.
To me this is the Cadillac of hair products. Not only is it a Vegan hair product, but is is also silicon free, sulfate free. The Innersense line is my absolute favorite organic hair product.
According to the Innersense.com website, Innersense is
- Formulated free of phthalates, ethoxylates, sulfates, silicones, 1,4 dioxane, parabens, petro compounds, propylene and butylene glycol, PEG, MEA, TEA, MIA, EDTA artificial dyes or synthetic fragrances
- High concentrations of key ingredients mean less water
- Gluten-free, cruelty-free and non-GMO
Pros
- This shampoo was the one recommended for my natural hair to me when I got my Deva Hair cut.
- It is great at helping you get rid of buildup on your hair and scalp without drying your hair out.
- It is the first time I actually have had a professional tell me what I should be using, and I can tell the difference.
Cons
- This product line is hard to find, I initially purchased it from the salon I got my hair cut at, but have been unable to find it outside of a salon.
- I was hoping to swing by a beauty counter and pick up some to help me get through the weekend and quickly learned that you can only find it at select salons or at Innersense.com
Frizzy Curly Hair Styling
Curls Styling Cream
Before I discovered Innersense I used to use love using Curls on my frizzy curly hair. It meets my checklist of sulfate and silicone free and is lightweight. If you decide to use the Curls styling cream, I recommend you also use the Curls gel, or the Ecostyler gel to finish your hair.
Pros
- It’s relatively easy to find at Target and Amazon, At Target is will often sell out so I used to stock up when I saw it.
- Silicone and Sulfate free
Cons
- Creamy texture can sometimes weigh my hair down
- Depending on the gel you use on top it could leave those tiny white balls on your hair, if you have applied gel to your hair after a conditioner or styling gel you totally know what I am talking about.
Innersense I create Volume
I Create Volume is a clear gel-like styling cream. It adds a nice layer of shine while allowing my curls to clump together. The cool thing about this product is it works for all hair textures, but especially frizzy curly hair. I was really surprised when my stylist put on a volume styling product on my hair because I have a lot of hair, but I see now that I Create Volume just really brings out the best in your hair and it a great one-two punch when combined with your hair gel.
Pros
- Silicone and Sulfate free
- Light texture
- Doesn’t weight my hair down and clumps curls together nicely
- It’s clear so it doesn’t leave those tiny balls when I pair it with gel
Cons
- Can only find it at a salon or at Innersense.com
Frizzy Curly Hair gels
Innersense I create Hold
You guessed it! This is what I currently use! I love that this gel doesn’t leave my hair crunchy or weighed down.
Pros
- I didn’t know I had ringlets until switching to this product line
- Great balance of hold, definition and movement
Cons
- It takes a while for your hair to “detox” from other hair products so expect it to take at least a month before you begin to see a large difference.
Below I am sharing two photos so you can see the difference. I tried to pick photos that were “equal” because I hate when people choose a really crappy before then a really great after. I hope you can see the difference, and this is literally only a month between the two shots.
Before Innersense
After Innersense
I don’t think my hair looked bad “before” in fact I felt like I was having a pretty good hair day during that shoot. But I do notice a significant improvement since switching to Innersense.
Eco Styler
Eco Styler was my go to gel for a solid three years!! They recently made a few changes to their formula after getting some really bad press about the ingredients in this gel. The new formula in the green tub is sulfate and silicon free, and it’s inexpensive. Did I mention you can buy a REALLY big tub for under $10 which helps me be super generous with the product and get great results. I have tried lots of gels and many are great but because I have so much hair I really liked this one a lot for a long time. It’s not Flakey and works with most leave in conditioners.
Pros
Super affordable and easy to find. Works with lots of other lines without being Flakey or making those weird white beads.
Cons
Long term use does leave a significant amount of residue on the hair. It’s very important to use a great shampoo because the alcohols in their gel can cause really subtle damage even though you are getting results. It’s hard to get ringlets in your hair with this gel because it is really heavy.
Curls
This Curls gel was also my favorite one for a while. The ingredients are better than Ecostyler gel overall but the bottle is small. This size you can get at Target will run you about $10 which is twice the amount as the much larger Ecostyler but is much better for your hair. I used this product for almost a year and loved it. For a while cost was more important than ingredients and that’s why I went away from this gel. But if ingredients are important to you, Curls is a great option for you.
Pros
Easy to find and can be found at Amazon or Target. Better ingredients to promote hair health.
Cons
- Small package
- Usually lasts me about four washes
- Can be hard to find as it often sells out
My current frizzy curly hair routine
As you may have guessed Innersense is my current favorite line. I wash with the Color Awakening Hair bath, and condition with the Color Radiance Daily Conditioner, and style with I create Volume and I create hold
Shampoo
- Color Awakening Hair Bath
Conditioner
- Color Radiance Daily Conditioner
Styling
- I Create Volume
- I Create Hold
Please let me know in the comments if you try any of the products that I shared with you. And please remember to give whatever you try a fair shot and stick with it for at least a month before you decide if it’s right for your hair.
Thanks for stopping by friends!

Chantea
I love the Innersense product too! My hairdresser uses Uncle Funky’s Daughter Curl Stimulator first on soaking wet hair (let it sit for 5-10mins), then I Create Hold as 2nd humectant gel and less than a dime size (drizzle in your hand) amount on each section of I Create Volume (to hold curls for humid weather).
After adding all the gels, sit under a hooded dryer until her is 80-90% dry then air dry or 50% dry then diffuse with the Dyson hair dryer.
With the combination of the the two humectant gels (Curl stimulator & I Create Hold), you lock in the moisture in you hair then end with the anti-humectant gel and end up with fabulous curls.
