3 Budget Family Travel Tips for Labor Day Weekend

3 Budget Family Travel Tips for Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend is quickly approaching and today I am sharing with you three tips for budget family travel.

Family budget travel Tip #1 – Ditch the plane

My family and I love to hop on a plane as much as the next person but for Labor Day we opt to travel as far as our car will take us. Most year’s that is the mountains or the coast. Since labor day is an extended weekend and our kids are finally back in school, we always decide to choose budget-friendly trips for our family, which means ditching the plane.

We live in Central California, but no matter where you live in the world, a new adventure is definitely a car ride away.

Budget travel tip number 2 – Book Kid-Friendly Lodging

Another budget travel tip is to find a kid-friendly place to stay. We recently stayed at Motel 6 in Monterey and had such a lovely time.

The rooms were comfortable and kids under 17 stay free (when staying with paid adult) which is so important when you travel with a family as large as ours. Motel 6 just recently upgraded many of their locations and rooms include FREE basic wifi, and on site coin laundry.

Extra bonus that when you book the double queen, the room comes equipped with a fridge and microwave which is also great to warm up a quick snack or easy breakfast on the run.

Motel 6 Monterey was only a 15-minute drive from all the action. We made time to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium while we were in town. Motel 6 is centrally located, and only steps from restaurants. Extra bonus… the ocean was only a 2 minute drive from our room.

No matter where you travel you can find a Motel 6 in the center of it all.

Fun can be free

When we choose a location to visit, we try to pick a low cost or free option. A few of our favorites are:

  1. Playing at the Ocean
  2. Forest/Natural walk
  3. Tour a city or state capital
  4. Visit a public museum

We love to travel with our kids and the extended Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to get away. This last trip cost us under $300 for the entire weekend, and the memories we created were priceless.

Special thanks to Motel 6 for partnering with us for this blog post. Please be sure to visit Motel 6 during your next family trip, I know you will find great value in staying in their newly renovated rooms.
